INTRODUCTION
------------

WARNING: USE OF FACTORY WILL WIPE OUT ALL PATCHES AND PRESETS CURRENTLY
STORED IN YOUR JUPITER 6!

FACTORY Is a 4K temporary replacement image that will restore the Roland
Jupiter 6's factory patches into the board's non-volatile RAM. For many
people this is a preferred method over using unreliable tape. FACTORY Will
restore all of the Roland Jupiter 6 patches and presets originally contained
on the factory patch/preset tape provided with the Jupiter 6.

NOTE: You will need to burn this image into an Intel 2732 EPROM (or
equivalent pin-compatible part). Synthcom Systems, Inc. cannot provide this
service.

WHAT'S IN THE PACKAGE
---------------------

There are 5 files contained in this distribution:

README - This file. README Instructions for installation and
		   operation of FACTORY

FACTORY.HEX - Plain HEX version of the FACTORY image

FACTORY.IHX - Intel HEX version of the FACTORY image

FACTORY.MHX - Motorola HEX version of the FACTORY image

FACTORY.BIN - Binary version of the FACTORY image

The FACTORY file you need will depend upon what your EPROM programmer
requires or can use. All of the images above are identical, and the
differences are only provided for your convenience.

The images wind up being 4K in length when actually programmed into the
2732 or equivalent pin-compatible part.

INSTALLING FACTORY
------------------

If you are not comfortable with opening up your Jupiter 6, then take this
section to a qualified technician and have them do it.

1. Unscrew the 3 silver side screws on each side of the Jupiter 6.

2. Unscrew the 3 black screws on the control panel of the Jupiter 6. They
are located in the middle, left, and right of the panel slightly above
   the keys.

3. Be VERY careful and lift the Jupiter 6's control panel. It is hinged on
the back of the board, and should lift easily. Do not lift the panel
any further than a 90 degree angle to the keys. Many wire bundles will
be stretched and possibly pulled apart if this happens.

4. Locate the control board under the panel. From left to right, the boards
are: 4 Voice board, 2 Voice Board, control board, Power supply.

5. Locate the 2732 (or equivalent pin-compatible part) on the control board.
Remove the chip. Be careful! Don't bend the pins! Notice that the
notched end points to the LEFT.

6. Install your newly burned 2732 containing the FACTORY code. Again, point
the notched end to the LEFT - just like all the other chips on that board.

7. Ensure that no pins are bent, and that the chip is correctly seated.

8. Set the control panel back down in its original position. Don't bother
putting back in the screws yet, as we need to reinstall the original
   Jupiter 6 EPROM.

USING FACTORY
-------------

Factory is quite simple to use. Now that it is installed, turn on the Jupiter
6. You will get a code in the form of lights on A-F and 1-8:

A 1 - External scratch RAM failure. This means that the code was unable to
read/write an image to the external scratch RAM within the control
board. The most likely cause of this is a defective SRAM chip. This
does NOT indicate a failure with the non-volatile RAM.

A 2 - Internal CPU RAM failure. This code means that the memory built into
the 8031 (or 8051 if so equipped) is defective. The main processor
      should be replaced.

A 3 - NVRAM read/writes unreliable. FACTORY Will attempt to run a memory
check on the non-volatile RAM, and if this memory test fails it usually
means a low battery. If the battery is 3 volts or stronger, then the
problem is most likely with the NVRAM chip itself.

A 4 - Memory protect is turned on. FACTORY Can't do its work if you have the
board's write protect on. Turn off the board, turn the write protect
off, and turn the board back on again.

A 5 - Failure while writing information to NVRAM. In addition to the tests
originally run on the NVRAM, the data pulled from the FACTORY EPROM
is verified when written to the non-volatile RAM. If, during this
step, data read back from NVRAM doesn't match what was supposed to be
written, this code will be presented.

(there are no A 6 or A 7 codes)

A 8 - This indicates a successful NVRAM write with the factory patches.

WHEN YOU'RE ALL DONE...
-----------------------

Reinstall the original Jupiter 6 EPROM. Be careful, and ensure that the pins
are straight and that you are installing the EPROM with the notched end toward
the LEFT (just like the other IC's on the board).

Turn on the board. It should come up with normal operation as before. All of
the factory patches and presets are restored.

SUPPORT
-------

We cannot guarantee support on FACTORY in any way shape or form, but we will
try our best to answer questions regarding the EPROM. Please do not ask us
to send an EPROM with the code in it, as we are not set up to do so. If you
have trouble with FACTORY, we'll try our best to help out, but cannot
guarantee anything. FACTORY Is provided as-is, and free of charge.

Send an email message to support@synthcom.com. We will do our best to answer
your questions.
